October Book Lust

October Book Lust
This month's Book Lust column has guest reviews by a couple of StockTwits friends on financial matters as well as a review of Harvard professor Sander's book on Justice, which I originally heard about on the Diane Rheme Show. Buddha's Brain combines two of my favorite subjects while two other books address the current economic crisis. Please submit your suggestions for November's column.

Jon Stewart and the Gerund
English teachers the world over must've loved the way Jon Stewart taught us the gerund.

Old Age in America

Old Age in America
My dear friend is going through end-of-life issues with her parents. Below I've pasted a missive she sent to me from her childhood home, where she's been helping out after her father collapsed.

August Book Lust
I want to read (but haven't yet) these four books: The Myth of the Rational Market, The Ascent of Money, Guts: Combat, Hellraising, Cancer, Business Startups and Undying Love, and Habit. Please write a review or give me a thumbs up/down on these four if you read them already.

In July 2009 a new computer AAA Foundation released a new computer program designed to help Baby Boomers retrain their brains and delay the impact of aging.

Next Q: Online/Offline

Next Q: Online/Offline
Continuing the series of Q&A: What goes online and in print varies from a person to person and must align with industry norms. For example, when I ran an environmental contracting business my market was general contractors with public-bid jobs. Contractors are low-tech, and expect bids to be FAXED, not emailed. Most of them have Yahoo or Hotmail accounts and a LIGHT web presence if any.

Next Q: Personal vs Professional Blog?
Let's say you're a baseball card collector, you love all things about the sport but your paid work is interior design. How to get into the new media groove? You might talk about the parallels between project management and third base coaching or dealing with a difficult customer with a personality like Ty Cobb's. This makes you a REAL PERSON, infuses warmth into your posts and will probably garner you a following of other baseball lovers. Wow, imagine having a client roster full of other people who love the game -- that's the potential of your new media voice.

Speaking on Newsletters

Speaking on Newsletters
This week I speak to the Carolina Professional Saleswomen and Entrepreneurs on a favorite topic: Newsletters and CAN-SPAM. I plan to start with a primer on the scary compliance stuff and then discuss how professionals can build their newsletter subscription list (as well as subcriptions to blogs, ezines, etc) with a solid CONTENT strategy, including article marketing.
