Wisdom. What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out?

I decided to be an age-appropriate mother to my 18- and 21-year-old sons. This means I decided to stop prodding them in the “right” direction (in their parlance, I stopped nagging).  I remind myself that they know where I stand on the important issues of life and they’re free to make their own choices.  I decided to differentiate between accepting and approving of their choices; I can accept without approving.

How did it turn out? We’re all happier with our relationships. They’re on productive paths to adulthood not so much because of what I’m doing now, but because of the values they learned when they were little. Sure, their paths have potholes, as does my own, but at least we have each other for roadside assistance.

It’s best to have failure happen early in life. It wakes up the Phoenix bird in you so you rise from the ashes.” – Anne Baxter
